Automobile as Identity

Artwork by Patri Friedman

In March '00, I became the proud owner of a gleaming new Honda S2000, purchased from San Leandro Honda. After the wild popularity of my Y2K hairstyle, I decided to use my skull as canvas yet again, so Jeremy Plunkett, artist and hairstylist, inscribed the above design. Like the Y2K, this was meant to serve as both fashion and social commentary (although the balance here is more towards the former). Why do we identify so strongly with our cars? Why are automobiles often so central to the identity of males in american society? Is this a good thing to focus on? While the haircut was meant to be, on the surface, silly and amusing, there is a dark undercurrent lurking in those questions. For a radical but fascinating view on the subject of cars, try Heathcote Williams' Autogeddon. Below are further pictures of my ride & 'do, which can be seen around the Bay Area, particularly in Palo Alto and sometimes at Stanford. If you wish to use these images, please ask me first. I will probably say yes.
