Patri's Projects
I have a lot of ideas. Having ideas is easy.
Implementing them, however, takes a lot of time and hard work, so that
part is going a bit slowly. Here are some of my ideas, both completed
and speculative.
Completed Projects
Ongoing Projects
- Alpine Butterfly
Lodge. The ABL is a communal house of which I am a resident
and co-owner.
- Seastead. One path
towards the "Independent Libertarian Country" vision which is
described below is to somehow create new livable land on the
oceans. Like most new country projects, most suggestions for this
are foolishly idealistic (FMF's Atlantis, New Utopia). Wayne Gramlich's
Seastead is the first realistic plan I've seen. Conveniently, he
lives in the same town as me, so we are collaborating on the
project. Much progress is being made.
- Simple
Online Commenting System. I wrote this simple package to get
feedback on the seasteading paper. It takes webpages and adds
commenting for each paragraph. Simple yet effective. The SOCS
index page, of course, can be commented on using SOCS :).
Visions
- Ephemerisle. A
proposed experiment in temporary autonomous anarcho-capitalist
community. An idea I had for an occasional gathering to be held
periodically in international waters. Its a great idea, but it
needs to wait until there is a full-sized Seastead to host it.
- Intentional
Community. I enjoy living communaly, and currently live in a
group house which may someday expand to a larger community, which I
hope to be part of if I'm still in the country.
- Independent
Libertarian Country. I am a devoted
libertarian, detest living in a big-government country, and have
little hope of it changing. The vast majority of governments
on this planet are based on non-consensual interactions. I think
the best hope for freedom is for someone to found an independent
country, which unfortunately seems to be very difficult. Other
people have efforts underway in this direction, but none have
yet been succesful.
- Project-Based
Living Website. As we move towards
a digital future and job tenure becomes shorter (at least here
in the Bay Area), life is getting closer towards what I see as
ideal: Projects instead of jobs. Projects are like jobs but more
flexible in some ways - time commitment, time duration, salary,
responsibility, and more limited in others - like they have a
finite time horizon. I think this would be a much more enjoyable,
dynamic way to go through life. This is kinda The
Cathedral And The Bazaar applied to jobs.
- Artwork. I have several great ideas for art,
but unfortunately I am not much of an artist. I shan't be more
specific because plagiarism is so easy. If only I could find
someone who is an artist but doesn't have enough ideas...
