If the originator of the defamation is anonymous or poor, find someone else, somewhere in the chain of causation, who is neither. In practice, that probably means identifying the internet service provider through whom the message passed and holding him liable. A web page is hosted on some machine somewhere; someone owns it. An email came at some point from a mail server; someone owns that.
