Community (5/12/03)
Feeling like crap has made me more aware that I love our house and its community. When its good, its great, and even when its bad, its still better than being alone. How do modern people stand living alone? No wonder people are so depressed. No wonder there are so many divorces. Sharing your space with exactly one person all the time seems like it would end up in a rut if things went well and a hell if they went badly. No wonder people flock to see expensive movies - its not just the big screen, its the thrill of the crowd caught up in the same thing as you.
I'm not saying that societies ills would all be cured if people lived in community or anything silly like that, but it feels like it must contribute. Its harder to become detached from reality when you're around other people, to lose perspective, to wallow in self-pity and obsess about your own problems. Other people naturally want sympathy and discussion of *their* problems after awhile, and that reminds you that we all go through crap from time to time, that the world doesn't revolve around us, but that other people do care.
| My burn is healing cleanly, without infection, although it looks like it may leave a pretty big scar. | Miserable though the last few weeks (and the last week in particular) have been, at least I've been learning from the experience. |
