Reunion, Brain Foods (5/5/03)
Spent some of my tiny store of free time at my 5-year college reunion this past weekend. It was great to see old friends. I ended up spending a lot of time talking about seasteading, which I guess shouldn't surprise me. Mudd is an engineering school, and what I'm doing is rather different than what most of my classmates are doing (work or grad school). And its not like I was just ranting about it because I'm interested, while I do tend to go off once started, people kept asking. I think the fact that this has kept happening to me in social situations is an indication of how powerful the idea is (and perhaps how cool the folk I socialize with are).
Now to finish grad school (1 more month! yay!), which is putting up a mighty battle here at the end. On that note, I can recommend this nutritional supplement designed to improve mental and physical performance. It has a small, but noticeable & significant effect in how "on" my brain feels, and is great for cutting through the fog of sleep-deprivation:
I tried Reboxetine [refs] (an S-NARI) for the first time today (2mg). It felt almost exactly like I expected (I'm getting pretty familiar with my neurotransmitters :) ). A slight jittery feeling all over, especially in my chest, extra energy, but the twitchy kind I get from stimulants like caffeine. I don't mind that sort of thing a lot, but I have to keep the dose low for it to not bother me. Modafinil/adrafinil is definitely the winner so far at un-jittery stimulation, although the nutrients above, while shorter term, accomplish the same thing.
What I'd love to get ahold of is amineptine, it sounds like a wonderful thing. Classic example of nanny government withholding something good from many because it causes harm to a few. But its not clear that its even manufactured anymore. Hmm, yet another business opportunity for seasteaders...
