Junkie (2/08/03)
I'm such an addict. Feeding the hunger in Palo Alto four times a
week isn't enough. I have to do it at home too, in my spare time,
instead of sleeping, eating, movies, social interaction. I do it
while walking. Lately I've been doing it in class behind my
three-ring binder. Last night I used the internet to help feed the
need, since it caters to all the kinks there are.
You guessed it, I'm a knowledge junkie. The double-dose of grad
school isn't supplying my learning fix, so I went on another amazon.com
binge. On the way are:
- "The Enterprise of Law: Justice Without the State" Bruce Benson;
(anarcho-capitalism)
- "Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets
and in Life" Nassim Nicholas Taleb (silly people, seeing patterns when none are there)
- "The Millennial Project: Colonizing the Galaxy in Eight Easy
Steps" Marshall T. Savage, Arthur Charles Clarke (Introduction);
(might be useful for seasteading research)
- "The Evolution of Cooperation" Robert Axelrod; (the original
book discussing the Prisoners Dilemma competitions and the infamous
TIT-FOR-TIT)
- "The Complexity of Cooperation" Robert M. Axelrod; (a later book
with more advanced discussion)
- "Simple Rules for a Complex World" Richard A. Epstein; (argues
that by making complicated rules to get precise justice, we end up
with less justice than if we stuck with simpler rules.)
- Principles for a Free Society: Reconciling Individual Liberty With
the Common Good" Richard A. Epstein; (libertarian philosophy from a legal standpoint)
- "Adaptation and Natural Selection" George Christopher Williams; (Williams is one of the founders of modern evolutionary biology, and this was his groundbreaking work)
Seriously, though, I do sometimes use learning as an escape from
doing, and that's bad. Learning in the service of doing is so much
cooler, but I love it either way. Can't give in too often though,
gotta shift that balance over towards doing, its more satisfying in
the end...push...push...push...man, this is hard, can I take a rest
for a minute and read?
