Getting Out, Meter Maid Sniper (1/28/03)

I recommend this short film Expired, which touches on some interesting issues. Libertarians should enjoy it.

I've liquidated more than half of my US stocks, and am considering investing in New Zealand. Their currency has been crushing ours for months, and I wish I'd gotten out when I first decided the american economy and currency were screwed. The only reason I haven't sold more stocks is that the remaining are at a loss (bought during the boom), and if you have capital losses w/out corresponding capital gains, they are wasted from a tax standpoint.

I'm being kept busy with my 2 masters degrees, the work at stanford is time-consuming and annoying, I alternate between thinking "This is boring", and "I could be getting paid for this". But I'm going to stick with it till June, when I should hopefully be done (or at least very close). Then I'll have more time for seasteading, my true passion.

I'm going to China over spring break (prob. Hong Kong mostly) with my housemate Dawn, who is taking advantage of being unemployed to visit all sorts of places. I've never been, and it should be interesting, I'm excited. Hong Kong is, after all, the sort of model which libertarian nations wish to emulate, and is held up as an example of what economic freedom can lead to.

Speaking of libertarian nations, I spent a fabulous evening with Meaghan and Charles, friends of my dads, discussing nation founding. Meaghan is native american and canadian, and she is trying to take advantage of the current political situation there to get significant autonomy for her tribes lands on Vancouver Island. Think Hong Kong West :). Charles has been interested in floating platforms for a long time, and had many interesting comments on the subject. Since there are so few nation-founders, particularly *active* ones like Meaghan, it was a rare and valuable experience.
