Patri's Bad Reputation
A longtime friend of mine, Matt, is dissatisfied with pursuing a PhD in CS. He has decided to drop out with a masters in december and move on to more satisfying things. Like many people in the insular, modern world, he is lonely and wants to be around more like-minded people, so we discussed the possibility of him coming to live here at the Leota House, which still has some free rooms. Much to our mutual surprise, his mother strenuously objected to him living with me. Now, I know I have a bad rep in some circles, but its not like he's a 19-year old girl! Then maybe it would be reasonable for a mother to worry, but Matthew isn't going to be tempted into anything he couldn't find for himself. I don't know what she thinks my home life is like, but we are relatively normal around here. Aren't we? Or has my sense of normal just been skewed by living with freaks for so long?
We couldn't help teasing her about it. After the conversation between the three of us had moved on a little, I said "Well, there is one thing you might not approve of. Every sunday...we all gather around the dining room table...and, well...we SMOKE CRACK." She turned a little red and he and I laughed a bit, and I then added "We would, of course, postpone the orgies for a few months until he got into the *swing* of things." We teased her good-naturedly, but he and I were both a bit perplexed by her attitude. Parents not trusting their *sons* with me? Wow.
