Consumer-Mas, the American Holiday
I should probably skip back a bit. When last I left you, it was mid-December, and I was about to leave for my winter travels. I went to Claremont first, then drove to Colorado, then went to Albequerque, New Mexico. Some fun stuff happened, but I don't feel like including it, so we'll move on.
Next stop was Philadelphia (suburbs thereof) to spend Christmas with my family. While being sickened by the crazy-ass commercialistic nature of this "family" holiday, I figured if I was gonna do it, I'd do it right. I had a roll of C-notes with me for playing poker, so I took that & my Amex Gold and went to The Mall, which is the central, definitive icon of my town (King of Prussia), that thing which it is known for by people all over the country. I shopped madly, peeling hundred dollar bills off my roll to buy things, enjoying myself while detesting the spectacle. Screaming kids "I want I want I want", hassled parents "I can't afford I can't afford", salesmen hawking their wares, the mall at Christmas is a seriously disturbing portrait of a sick consumer culture.
Next I headed up to Boston for the New Years party I always go to. Beforehand, I went skiing, the last time I hit the slopes without them hitting back (eerie foreshadowing!!!).
